The Art of Embracing Change

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Lisa from Helka Ceramics for five years now, and it’s been inspiring to follow her journey as she transitions from a shared ceramic studio to opening her own space in Berlin Kreuzberg: Helka Ceramics. I met Lisa on a sunny morning in her beautiful studio to talk with her about the challenges of running your own business and about her path that took her that far. It was truly inspiring to not only see her behind the pottery wheel, but to get to know the story behind it.

At a time when her previous work in translation has become less relevant due to the rise of AI, Lisa discovered her passion for ceramics more and more and what started as a hobby first has now turned into her own business. A journey that happened quite organically, she says.

Lisa’s adaptability, a lesson learned from her parents, has been a guiding force in her life and something that is more and more important in todays world. “Life often presents challenges, and sometimes it’s easy, while other times it demands a different approach,” she shares, revealing her pragmatic yet hopeful outlook. A combination that feels both refreshing and at the same time gives you a certain ease while listening to her. “What’s the worst that can happen?” she often reminds her. This mindset encourages Lisa to embrace the unknown, viewing each experience as a lesson that contributes to her growth. She considers herself a risk-taker, but doesn’t do it blindly but rather likes to be a smart risk-taker.

As the pandemic brought a newfound appreciation for ceramics, turning into quite a hype that Lisa has embraced wholeheartedly. While the world turned inward, she sought guidance through business coaching, taking her first serious steps into entrepreneurship. This careful approach reflects her desire to grow sustainably, learning to navigate the complexities of running a business while remaining true to her artistic vision. Though the current trend around pottery offers opportunities, Lisa understands the importance of being grounded and adaptable. She recognizes that ceramics may be perceived as a luxury, something people cut from their budgets in tighter times like right now.

Lisa’s entrepreneurial spirit harmonizes beautifully with her creative pursuits. She finds joy in crafting tableware designed to elevate the everyday dining experience, creating a space for connection and celebration. With her studio and pop-up events, she also likes to connect like-minded brands and a community that celebrates craftsmanship.

When I ask Lisa if she’s living her dream, she smiles, reflecting on the journey that has brought her here. “I never imagined this path, so I can’t say I am living my dream” she admits, “but I genuinely enjoy the ride.” This sense of fulfillment is what keeps her going.

As she reflects on her journey, Lisa acknowledges the need for balance. She carves out time for herself, recognizing that fulfillment comes not only from creating but also from nurturing her own well-being. At the same time she realized, that apparently each year, comes with some new project or challenge that takes all her time, energy and money, she smiles. Whether it’s her studio, her dog Lotta, or personal connections. For Lisa, this is simply a part of life’s journey - a continuous cycle of growth and exploration.

In the heart of Kreuzberg, Lisa from Helka Ceramics is not just shaping clay; she is weaving a narrative of resilience, connection, and artistic expression. As she continues to grow and adapt, her journey reminds us of the beauty found in the process and the connections we cultivate along the way.
